Gábor István Szabó (March 8, 1936 – February 26, 1982) was a Hungarian-American guitarist who made significant contributions to jazz music. Born in Budapest, Hungary, Szabó began playing guitar at the age of 14, inspired by a Roy Rogers movie he saw in 1949.
Szabó’s musical journey took a significant turn after the Hungarian revolution of 1956. He escaped to an Austrian refugee camp and later emigrated to San Bernardino, California. Despite initial struggles, including working as a janitor, Szabó persevered and attended the Berklee College of Music in Boston from 1958 to 1960.
