Aaron Wajnberg & Tineke Van Ingelgem (S5 | E256)

This is part one of a two-part interview with Tineke Van Ingelgem and Aaron Wajnberg. For our interview, it was late at night for Tineke and Aaron as we rushed headlong into cabaret music from the 1930s. Music from Kurt Weill, Francis Poulenc, Maurice Yvain, and Benjamin Britten. Now officially known as our buddies, Kurt, Frank, Maury, and Ben. We cover Kurt’s work in part one this week on Lester the Nightfly Radio.

Tineke Van Ingelgem is a Belgian soprano renowned for her unforgettable stage presence, powerful voice, and exceptional acting skills, making her a sought-after interpreter of strong women roles in Germanic and Eastern-European opera, such as Rusalka, the Marschallin (Der Rosenkavalier), and Chrysothemis (Elektra). Her career has taken her to prestigious venues across Europe, including La Scala in Milan and La Monnaie in Brussels, and she has cultivated a signature role in Médée (Cherubini). Beyond the operatic stage, she is an established Lied and oratorio singer who has collaborated with pianist Aäron Wajnberg on the CD Je ne t’aime pas, and she also serves as the general and artistic manager of Opera Caramba!, an opera company for children

Pianist Aäron Wajnberg is a Belgian-born musician distinguished for his extraordinary musical intelligence and poetic sensibility, establishing him as one of his generation’s most sought-after accompanists and chamber musicians since his Carnegie Hall debut in 2011. Highly regarded for his collaborative skill, Wajnberg has performed alongside leading singers such as Rolando Villazón, Sir Bryn Terfel, and Christoph Prégardien, specializing in Lied accompaniment and collaborating on contemporary music premieres. Wajnberg holds the position of Professor Lied at the Royal Antwerp Conservatoire and is dedicated to fostering the art form, having co-founded Antwerp LiedFest to bring high-level artists to Flanders.

Je ne t’aime pas

The collaboration between soprano Tineke Van Ingelgem and pianist Aäron Wajnberg on their album Je ne t’aime pas (I don’t love you) offers a deeply evocative exploration of 20th-century cabaret and art song, with the title track itself being a classic by Kurt Weill. The duo creates a smoky, intimate atmosphere, skillfully blurring the line between classical recital and sultry salon performance to convey themes of broken love and female resilience. Van Ingelgem’s expressive vocal delivery, often noted for its sly wit and ability to “drape a phrase over a rhythm,” is perfectly supported by Wajnberg’s internationally renowned accompaniment, bringing a palpable sense of heart-wrenching, bittersweet emotion to the repertoire, which also includes works by Francis Poulenc and Benjamin Britten.

Sly Wit

“She’s particularly adept at catching the lilt of a melody draping a phrase over a rhythm and there’s a sly wit about her Britten/Auden Cabaret Songs.”
