Harfenspieler (SongStudio 2025) S5 | E220
A report from Carnegie Hall’s SongStudio 2025: Bryn Terfel, Anthony Roth Costanzo, Hartmut Holl and Renee Fleming.
Carnegie Hall’s SongStudio is an innovative, week-long intensive workshop dedicated to exploring the future of the vocal recital. Directed by renowned soprano Renée Fleming, it brings together rising professional singers and collaborative pianists to refine their artistry through master classes, coaching, and public performances. The program is part of Carnegie Hall’s Weill Music Institute and aims to renew and refresh the vocal recital experience by engaging both new and familiar audiences.
Marilyn Horne founded The Song Continues program at Carnegie Hall in 1997. This initiative was part of her broader mission, through the Marilyn Horne Foundation (established in 1993), to preserve and promote the art of the vocal recital and support young singers.
An art song is a Western classical vocal music composition typically written for a single voice with piano accompaniment. It is a musical interpretation of an independent poem or text, designed for concert performance in an intimate setting.
Lieder (singular: Lied) are German art songs that set poetry to classical music, typically performed by a solo vocalist with piano accompaniment. This genre flourished during the Romantic era (18th–19th centuries) and is renowned for its intimate blending of music and poetry, where both the singer and pianist share equal responsibility in expressing the text’s emotional depth.
Italian art songs are commonly referred to as “Romanza” or simply “Canzone.” These songs are classical vocal compositions typically written for a solo voice with piano accompaniment, similar to the German Lieder and French Mélodie. They are characterized by their lyrical beauty, expressive melodies, and emotional depth.
